{"id":17263,"date":"2019-11-07T06:11:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T12:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.252.102.210\/~micklabr\/?p=17263"},"modified":"2019-11-07T06:11:00","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T12:11:00","slug":"howard-rumsey-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/micklabriola.com\/howard-rumsey-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Howard Rumsey Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Howard Rumsey<\/b> (November 7, 1917 \u2013 July 15, 2015) was an American jazz double-bassist known for his leadership of the Lighthouse All-Stars in the 1950s.<\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\" class=\"toc\">\n<div class=\"toctitle\" dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Born in <a title=\"Brawley, California\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brawley,_California\">Brawley, California<\/a>, Rumsey first began playing the piano, followed by the drums and finally the bass. After jobs with <a title=\"Vido Musso\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vido_Musso\">Vido Musso<\/a> and <a title=\"Johnnie Davis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johnnie_Davis\">Johnnie Davis<\/a>, Rumsey became part of <a title=\"Stan Kenton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stan_Kenton\">Stan Kenton<\/a>&#8216;s first band. Rumsey soon left Kenton after an argument. He played with <a title=\"Charlie Barnet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charlie_Barnet\">Charlie Barnet<\/a> and <a title=\"Barney Bigard\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barney_Bigard\">Barney Bigard<\/a> before taking a short hiatus from music. Following this absence from music, Rumsey returned to the Los Angeles jazz scene to form the group the Lighthouse All-Stars. For most of the 1950s this group played each Sunday at the Lighthouse Cafe in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Hermosa Beach\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hermosa_Beach\">Hermosa Beach<\/a>. During its lifetime, the Lighthouse All-Stars were one of the primary modern jazz institutions on the west coast, providing a home for many Los Angeles musicians.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Rumsey died from complications of pneumonia in Newport Beach, California, at the age of 97.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>In early 1949, Rumsey was in search of a playing job and came across the <a title=\"Lighthouse Caf\u00e9\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lighthouse_Caf%C3%A9\">Lighthouse Club<\/a> on Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach, which he felt would be an ideal place to play music. The Lighthouse was built in 1934 as a restaurant named Verpilates. In 1940, the business changed hands, and under new ownership it was turned into a Polynesian-styled club named the Lighthouse, primarily serving merchant seamen. In 1948 the club was sold to John Levine.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> After convincing Levine to permit the playing of jazz in the club, Rumsey played his first show on Sunday 29 May 1949, to immediate success.<\/p>\n<p>The first Lighthouse All-Stars was a group made up of Los Angeles musicians who had been a part of the Central Avenue scene in the 1940s, including <a title=\"Teddy Edwards\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teddy_Edwards\">Teddy Edwards<\/a>, <a title=\"Sonny Criss\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonny_Criss\">Sonny Criss<\/a>, <a title=\"Hampton Hawes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hampton_Hawes\">Hampton Hawes<\/a>, Frank Patchen, <a title=\"Bobby White\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bobby_White\">Bobby White<\/a> and Keith Williams. This band lasted for a time before Rumsey changed personnel to feature a new wave of players. The second edition of the Lighthouse All-Stars featured <a title=\"Jimmy Giuffre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jimmy_Giuffre\">Jimmy Giuffre<\/a>, <a title=\"Shorty Rogers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shorty_Rogers\">Shorty Rogers<\/a>, and <a title=\"Shelly Manne\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shelly_Manne\">Shelly Manne<\/a>. The success of this group soon landed them with a recording contract for Les Koenig&#8217;s Contemporary Records.
