Johan Torbjörn Hultcrantz (* 2. May 1937 in Stockholm ; † 18th January 1994 ) was a Swedish double bass player of the modern jazz].Hultzcrantz, who grew up in Bromma , first received piano lessons from his mother, a professional piano teacher. It was not until he was 18 that he began to play bass. As early as 1956 he belonged to Lars Gullin’s band , with whom he recorded as well as with Åke Perssonand the ensemble of Jazz Club 57 . In the early 1960s he performed with the pianist Lasse Werner , who formed the Swedish Jazz Quartet with Bernt Rosengren . In the next few years he also accompanied Americans such as Bud Powell and Dexter Gordon traveling through , mostly with Sune Spångberg( The Rainbow People ) or Stan Getz ( In Sweden 1958−60 ), as well as Don Cherry and Albert Ayler ( The First Recordings ), with whom he explored the beginnings of free jazz .
